General Motors has unveiled their new generation of Ecotec small displacement engines. A total of 11 engines will be part of this new Ecotec family which include 3- and 4-cylinder powerplants with displacement in the range of 1.0-1.5 litres.
The engines are built on a modular architecture, which promises that they deliver good fuel efficiency, are refined and durable. General Motors have not spilled the beans on the specifications yet but have confirmed that the power output from these engines will be in the range of 75 to 165bhp. Some of the engines will be equipped with turbochargers, while others will support hybrid and alternative fuel applications.
The engines will be built at five different plants - China, Hungary, Mexico, South Korea and the United States and the company plans to produce more than 2.5 million annually by 2017. The engines will eventually be used in 27 different models by the 2017 model year.
