Types of Spare Tyres
Earlier, the spare tyres that came with every model matched the tyres on the vehicle. They are called full-size spare tyres. Full-size spares are exact copies of your existing tyres and wheels.
However, as time passed, the car manufacturers preferred a space-saver spare to a full-size spare as they realized that the spare tyre is not used very frequently. These tyres, also known as donut spare tyres, reduce exhaust emission as they are lighter than full-size spares.
In recent times, run-flat tyres are also making the buzz as they are easily maintainable compared to traditional tyres.

How long can you drive on a full-size Spare?
Full-size spares are the most durable among spare tyres. You can drive on full-size spares for as long as you want. However, these tyres require larger storage space and reduce the economy.
It is important to note that the same manufacturers do not usually produce these spare tyres as the other tyres of the car. Hence, it is advisable to buy a new tyre as soon as possible after they are put to use.
How long can you drive on a donut spare?
One of the major drawbacks of a space-saver spare is that it cannot be a permanent replacement. This type of spare tyre is designed keeping in mind the space constraints and economy of the car. Though it comes in handy during sudden emergencies, it is not built to last.
Generally, a donut spare can be driven for not more than 70 miles and at speed no faster than 50 miles per hour. However, the car manual will recommend the driving speed and distance.
The main reason for the less durability of donut spares is that they have little to no tread, making them vulnerable to road hazards. It is also much smaller than the other tyres of the car, making it spin faster to catch up with the speed of the moving car.
How long can you drive on a run-flat tyre?
Even though run-flat tyres are tougher than the other tyres, they are not as durable as full-spare tyres. Run-flat tyres are built to withstand most road hazards rather than spare tyres. This type of tyre can continue to be driven on for about 50 miles after being punctured, as it doesn't go flat or blow out. You have to be observant of any changes in tyre pressure to know how long you can drive on it before getting a replacement.
