- The 2022 IBB report shares deep insights about India's used car industry.
- In FY 2022 about 4.4 million used cars were sold in India.
- Here we have listed down the Top 10 and other most popular models.
The fifth edition of the Indian Blue Book (IBB) has been released. The latest annual used car industry report offers deep insights into the growth, challenges and trends witnessed by India’s used car market during Financial Year 2021-22. The report highlights the fact that there is a huge acceptance and demand for pre-owned vehicles among Indian car buyers. In fact last fiscal year about 4.4 million used vehicles were sold in the country, and here are the Top 10 used car models that Indian car buyers preferred in FY2022.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift was the best-selling used car model sold in FY 2021-22.
Like in the new car space, here too we saw brands like Maruti Suzuki India, Hyundai India, Mahindra & Mahindra dominate the pre-owned car space. In fact, Maruti Suzuki leads the charge with four models in the 'Top 10' list - Maruti Suzuki Swift, Alto, Wagon R, and the Dzire. Hyundai and Mahindra each had two models representing them, which included the Hyundai i10 and i20, and for Mahindra, it was the Scorpio and the Bolero. The last two on the list were the Honda City and Renault Kwid.

While Maruti Suzuki led the charger with 4 models Hyundai too had a strong presence in the Top 10 list.
Some of the other car models that were popular among car buyers looking for a used car included - Maruti Suzuki’s Baleno, Brezza, Celerio and Ertiga, Hyundai’s Creta, Venue, Xcent and Santro, Honda’s Civic, CR-V and Amaze, and Tata’s Tiago and Nexon. The list also includes the Mahindra XUV500, Toyota Etios, Ford EcoSport, and Skoda’s Rapid, Octavia and Superb.
Demand for models like Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon was also strong in the used car space.
Now, the report doesn’t share the volume share of each of these models in FY2022, however, it does offer us a segment-wise classification of different buyers and the models they preferred. The more value-conscious first-time buyer preferred models like the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Alto, whereas buyers who are climbing up the social chain also chose models like - the Swift or Dzire, new-gen Santro, Celerio, i10, Tiago or Kwid.
A segment-wise classification of different buyers and the models they preferred.
Buyers for whom quality was highly important went for cars like Honda City or Amaze, Mahindra Scorpio, Hyundai Xcent, or Toyota Etios, in addition to some of the models we mentioned above. Used car buyers looking for a bit more premium options chose models like - Hyundai i20, Verna, Maruti Baleno, Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport or Skoda Rapid. And then we have those looking for the top-of-the-spectrum models like Hyundai Creta, Venue, Kia Seltos, Honda Civic, Mahindra XUV500, Skoda’s Octavia or Superb, among others.
This certainly shows that today’s used car buyers are certain of the vehicle brand, model, and variant before entering a dealership.
