Intelligent Lane Intervention (LI)

Car safety is one of the top priorities that most customers carefully assess before making a purchase. It is necessary that a vehicle is as safe as it is stylish and high-performance. Keeping the need of the hour in mind, brands and researchers have developed technologies that enhance safety and assist drivers. One such technology that has proved its effectiveness is ‘Intelligent Lane Intervention' that improves the safety of both the driver and nearby vehicles.

What Is Intelligent Lane intervention Technology?
This technology tracks the motion of the car and the distance of the road. It maps the lanes and alerts the driver if it senses a chance that the car might leave its lane. It also helps the driver keep to the same lane by applying the breaks, if the vehicle is about to leave its lane.
How Does This Technology Work?
The technology uses a discrete camera that is fitted near the rare view mirrors that tracks the distance between the vehicles and lane markings. The camera reads the white or yellow lane markings. Then it maps the minimal distance that should be maintained between the lane marking and the vehicle inside the lane. When the car is about to cross the marked point inside the lane, it displays a waring or a chime to alert the driver. If the driver doesn't respond to the warning, the system also assists the driver by applying the breaks to each wheel.

In some technologies, the driver's seat or the car starts vibrating gently if the vehicle is drifting out of its lane. This is also the same point when the technology starts applying the breaks to prevent drifting. In more advanced technologies, if the driver is unable to change lanes in time, the system starts gently steering the car back into the lane.
When Does Intelligent Lane Intervention System Work?
Intelligent lane intervention needs specific conditions to activate. These include:
- Specific speed- Lane intervention systems need a certain speed to activate. Most systems can detect lanes after the car crosses 35mph. If the car is going slower the system will not activate, unless modified for the same.
- Clear markings- The system detects the distance using the white or yellow markings on the road. If the markings aren't present or are not clearly visible, the system won't be able to detect the same, and will not function.
- Turn Signals- The system will not activate if your turn signals are on. This is because it is common to cross lane markings while making turns.

Technologies like Lane Intervention are useful in saving lives and reducing the risk of accidents. Such systems also keep the driver alert while driving. Most car companies are adopting such technologies and innovating further to make their cars safer and more functional.
