Nagpur Municipal Corporation To Produce Bio-CNG From Garbage

- NMC will produce bio-CNG from 1,050 metric tonne of garbage.
- It'll supply 1,000 MT wet and dry garbage to a Netherlands based company
- The company will incur operation and maintenance cost and share revenue.
Nagpur Municipal corporation will produce Bio-CNG and green hydrogen from garbage that wouldn't require the body to incur any additional capital expenditure and operation or maintenance cost. The municipal body will use around 1,050 metric tonne of garbage to extract Bio-CNG from it. NMC will supply 1,000 MT wet and dry garbage to a Netherlands based company every day and the company will purchase 25 acres of land to setup its plant and will itself take care of the operation and maintenance cost as well. In turn, the company has also assured to share some revenue with NMC.

Quite a few mass market carmakers offer dedicated CNG range.
Minister of Road, Transport and Highways - Nitin Gadkari has been advocating the benefits of bio-fuel and the idea to produce bio-CNG from garbage was proposed to him by the company, as shared by the Mayor of Nagpur, Dayashankar Tiwari. A company from Chennai plans to set up a plant to produce green hydrogen from 50 metric tonnes of Garbage. "We have got verification of two projects done by Neeri, which confirmed these were feasible and also viable," the mayor added.

CNG fuel also make a better business case for commercial vehicle operations.
The government has been promoting the use of CNG and other alternate fuel as well. In 2019, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations were also inaugurated for refilling of CNG-run private and commercial vehicles in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Gas Authority of India (GAIL) is working on the distribution under Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga & Sahar Gas Vitaran project in Ranchi and Jamshedpur. The GAIL will also establish 11 CNG stations in Ranchi in the next few years for 75,000 CNG-run vehicles.
