  • The new-gen BMW 5 Series will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show
  • The new BMW 5 Series shares its design and styling with the new 7 Series
Ahead of its official unveiling at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, BMW has imported the new generation 5 Series, codenamed G30, models to India for homologation. The Indian arm of the Bavarian carmaker has imported both the 530d and the 520d models to the country, which indicates that BMW plans to launch the car in India sooner than we think.

The seventh generation BMW 5 Series a.k.a. G30 has been built on the same platform as the new generation 7 Series. The cars are underpinned by the same Cluster Architecture (CLAR) as the latter, which means you can expect a lot more technological prowess and smart features from the new 5 Series. Moreover, owing to the new platform, the executive sedan is expected to be lighter by about 100 kg, which will not only boost performance but also make it more fuel efficient. In fact, BMW has used robotic 3D Mapping to create a precise digital image which will help the company boost the sedan's overall quality.

In addition to that, the all-new G30 5 Series will also share its design and styling cues with its older sibling, which is quite evident from the several spy images and official teasers that we have seen over the past few months. BMW is yet to reveal the technical specification and the features of the car, but it is clear that the cabin will also be inspired by the new 7 Series and so will be the feature list.

Under the hood, the new 5 Series will come powered by the same set of petrol and diesel engines as the outgoing model, but BMW has tuned them for better performance. The ones imported to India, as mentioned earlier, the BMW 520d and 530d models are powered by a 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre diesel engines respectively. Globally the car will also come with more powerful options like the 540d and M550i. The new 5 Series will also be the recipient of the BMW's new i Performance plug-in hybrid powertrains - 530e and 540e. Whether BMW will launch the hybrid models in India or not is still unclear.

Globally the new-gen 5 Series will be offered as a sedan (G30), a wagon (G31) and a GT (G32), joining the line-up at a later stage. Upon its arrival, it will compete with the likes of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, the new Volvo S90 and the Jaguar XF.
