Volkswagen Taigun Tales: The Strategy Behind Bringing The Compact SUV To India

Volkswagen announced its big strategy for India at the Auto Expo 2020. Its intention to enter the most competitive segment in India was clear and that it would be a compact SUV was not something it hid either. In fact, at the Auto Expo 2020, we got to see the car in the flesh, how it would look and feel. The Taigun had big shoes to fill and that’s because the Tiguan, Tiguan All-Space and the T-Roc had already made their way into the country and were accepted with open arms. The T-Roc and Tiguan All-Space in fact were sold out just a few months after they were launched in the country.
With the Taigun, then, Volkswagen promised to bring in an SUV which would showcase a zero compromise on driving dynamics, quality, and affordability. With the VW DNA at the core, the Taigun, was all about pushing the boundaries and creating a niche in the very robust growing compact SUV segment. Though it has a small footprint, compared to its rivals, the Taigun is big on space on the inside. Boasting of the longest wheelbase in the segment, the Taigun gives more bang for the buck and that’s exactly what VW set out to achieve with this product.
Thanks to the variable MQB A0-IN platform, Volkswagen has been able to achieve higher levels of localization on the Taigun and that means efficiency in terms of production and also affordability for its consumers. But the Taigun was never meant to be a product which was only for the Indian market.
Very recently, the company has begun exports of the Taigun to other markets. The made-in-India Taigun heads to the Mexican market among others and India becomes a production and export hub for the SUV. Volkswagen, will apply the same strategy with the Virtus too and we can’t wait to see how that pans out. For now, the Taigun, is in a league of its own, as it finds it reaches out to more customers every day.
