Key Highlights
- The 2017 Tesla Model S gets a Model 3 inspired front missing the grille
- The Tesla Model S facelift gets a larger 70-amp on-board charger
- The 2017 Tesla Model S also gets the HEPA air filteration system
Not long after the Model 3 was unveiled a few days ago, Tesla has pulled wraps off the 2017 Model S facelift, the electric luxury sedan's first major update since it was launched back in 2012. The updates are subtle, cosmetic and refreshing on the facelifted model and bring the Model S in-line with the styling showcased on the Model 3. Most noticeable of all is the absence of the grille on the 2017 Model S. The fake grille, which served little purpose on the outgoing model has been done away with entirely, making for a neater appearance, and gets a slim chrome line in the centre that holds up the Tesla logo.
The 2017 Tesla Model S facelift also gets revised bumper with slightly larger air intakes, whereas the headlights receive mild tweaks and feature full adaptive LED lamps with 14-inch three-position LED dynamic turn lights. Moving inside, the cabin gets updated with new trim accents including Figured Ash Wood Décor and Dark Ash Wood Décor and will also feature the HEPA air filteration system from the Model X that improves the cabin's air quality by removing 99.97 per cent of particulate exhaust pollution and effectively all allergens, bacteria and other contaminants. The HEPA system though is available as part of an optional package that also includes leather seats, power liftgate, three-position LED turn and fog lamps.
On the technological front, the 2017 Tesla Model S gets an upgraded base charger that now pulls 48-amp, up from the current 40-amp. A 72-amp on-board charger is also being provided as an optional extra for $1500 that helps charging the electric sedan faster. In terms of performance, the Model S 70D with Rear-Wheel Drive and a 70 Kwh battery is capable of doing the 0-100 km/h run in 5.5 seconds with a total range of 376 km.
A quick trivia, Tesla is known to do things differently and that is why it is not surprising to know that the company's electric cars do not get updated by model year, like other conventional cars do. Instead, Tesla rolls out updates for its cars as and when it happens, similar to updates for a software. In addition to the upgrades, the automaker will also introduce over-the-air software updates for its cars that will be available for download as soon as they are available.
