The Yaris is Toyota's first attempt at entering the highly contested compact sedan category in India and contends with seasoned players like the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Rapid and the Volkswagen Vento. The prices for the Yaris range from Rs 8.75-12.85 lakh (ex-showroom India) for the petrol manual variants and from Rs 9.95-14.07 lakh (ex-showroom India) for the petrol automatics.

In terms of equipment, the top of the line Toyota Yaris offers leather interiors, a touchscreen infotainment system and cruise control. It also offers roof mounted AC vents - a first in class and very useful feature along with inbuilt ambient lighting. The Toyota Yaris also offers features like a start-stop button, automatic climate control but misses out of features like Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

While all its competitors get a diesel motor, the Yaris is only offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 108 bhp of peak power and 140 Nm of peak torque. That said, you do get the option of choosing a manual 6-speed gearbox or the Toyota Yaris automatic with a CVT option. The top of the line CVT also gets paddle shifters.

2. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

Among the best-selling sedans in India, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz was recently moved to the company's premium retail network - Nexa. The popular Maruti Suzuki sedan, now no longer retailed through standard Maruti Suzuki dealerships, is offered with a choice of two engine options: a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diese engine. With Maruti Suzuki Ciaz's prices starting at ₹ 8.2 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the Sigma Petrol variant, the car-line comes amply loaded with provisions for entertainment, comfort, convenience, and safety including touchscreen SmartPlay system, navigation system, and reverse parking sensor and camera, depending on the selected variant. However, dual airbags and ABS with EBD are offered as standard provisions across the entire range.

3. Honda City

Loaded with a myriad of cosmetic upgrades and new features, the 2017 Honda City clocked more than 14,000 orders in just one month. Other than extensive revisions to its exterior, the latest iteration of Honda's best-selling car now gets a 7-inch advanced infotainment with capacitive touchscreen, satellite-linked turn-by-turn navigation, Mirrorlink support, voice recognition, automatic climate control, multi-view rear camera, and cruise control among a plethora of other features. For safety, the Honda City's list of standard provisions includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX mounts for rear child seats. The new Honda City comes powered by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol and a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel.

As is evident, the biggest change is the front end, which now gets a single-piece hexagonal grille along with newly designed headlamps that have projector headlamps within. The new-generation Hyundai Verna is built on a new 'K2' platform which also makes use of the company's Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design philosophy.While the earlier Verna also came with 1.4-litre petrol and diesel engines, Hyundai has decided to discontinue these in the new-gen Verna. It will only have the 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines. The 1.6-litre petrol engine makes 121 bhp and 151 Nm of peak torque while the diesel engine churns our 126 bhp and 260 Nm of peak torque. Both engines are offered with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic torque converter unit.

The Sunny is offered with the 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre k9k dci diesel engine options.
