BMW 7 Series With Sub 2000cc Diesel Engine Imported in India for Testing

- The 7 Series 725Ld imported is powered by a 1995cc 4-cylinder diesel

- The less powerful 7 Series can be targetted at chauffeur driven customers
Recent import-export data suggests that BMW India has imported the new generation 7 Series with a 2.0-litre diesel engine in the country for testing purposes. The 2016 7-Series was launched in India at the Auto Expo in February this year, but is one of the models that is barred from being sold in the Delhi-NCR region in its diesel avatar. BMW could be mulling to introduce the small capacity sub 2000cc diesel engine on its flagship offering in a bid to counter the diesel ban.
Specifications of the 1995cc four-cylinder diesel engine are not known yet, but it is certain that the motor will produce considerably lesser power than the 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder oil burner that belts out 265bhp of power and 620Nm of torque. The petrol variants sport the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 450bhp and 650Nm of torque.

The BMW 725Ld could be the new base variant on the 7 Series, and can be expected to command a lower price tag compared to the higher variants. Being a sub 2000cc diesel engine, the 725Ld will be eligible to be sold in the nation's capital, making it the only flagship luxury sedan to be on sale, unlike the Mercedes-Benz S-Class as well as the Jaguar XJL The move certainly would be a smart one considering the fact that BMW can target specifically chauffeur driven customers on the low performance variant that is likely to be packed with other tech wizardry and creature comforts, which the new 7 Series has in abundance.
Incidentally, this isn't the first time the BMW 725Ld will be going on the sale in India. Back in the later 1990s, the 725Ld was one of the variants sold by the German automaker of its luxury sedan and in a way, BMW will be bringing back the model to India after almost two decades. Details about the launch are sketchy at the moment, but we expect the company to introduce the model later this year, possibly ahead of the festive season. Prices for the new generation BMW 7 Series range starts from Rs. 1.10 crore, going up to Rs. 1.50 crore (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).
