Highlights

  • Domenicali has revealed that there is interest from many African nations
  • He revealed there was interest from Kyalami in South Africa as well
  • Kyalami was the spot for the last race that happened in Africa

Kyalami was the mainstay of the F1 calendar between the 60s and the 80s but in 1993 it hosted its last race, in fact, the last race on the African continent. Looks like if F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is to be believed there is great interest from Kyalami to make a return to the F1 calendar.

"We received interest from Kyalami to be back on the calendar. Of course, we have discussed with them in order to see if they are ready from the technical perspective, the financial perspective, to be inserted in the calendar, so discussions are there. We have received other requests from other countries in Africa...at this moment, I need to keep it confidential," he told CNN.

2022 will also host its first race in Miami which will happen on May 8 and Domenicali has been open about having even more races than the current 23 planned for the 2022 season. Domenicali has also expressed interest in spreading the calendar to new venues across the world even if that means some traditional European venues are dropped.

"How many do we want in Europe, in America, in the Middle East, in Asia and the Far East? I can see fewer GPs in Europe, more in the US and more in the Middle East and Asia. It's something that's part of the evolution of a business and this is entertainment. Of course, we are aware of the importance of tradition and it gives you the ingredients for the future. But if you live by tradition you don't live long. We need to build foundations for the future," he had told GQ Magazine a couple of months ago.

Even in 2022, Zandvroot was added to the calendar, and then later in the year Saudi Arabia will be hosting its first F1 race and there is a chance that even Doha will get a race.
