The number of road accidents, and the fatalities involved, continues to take on alarming proportions in India. A recent government report stated that nearly 5 lakh road accidents occurred in the country in 2015, which resulted in the death of 1.46 lakh people. As much as we urgently need better road safety laws, the country's residents also need to take responsibility.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, emphasizing on the role of citizens to ensure road safety, recently said, "Please do not drink and drive. Obey traffic rules. Government alone cannot ensure safety on roads, people should also do their bit."

Mr Gadkari announced that Rs 11,000 crore will be spent on rectification of over 700 accident-prone 'black spots' across the country. He explained, "726 black spots have been identified and work is on to rectify these. Rs 11,000 crore will be spent for this work." The minister added that 10 per cent of the Central Road Fund (CRF) given to each state will be used to identify black spots on state and other highways.

Furthermore, a Group of Ministers is working on recommendations for better safety on Indian roads which will pave the way for introduction of a new Motor Vehicles Act in Parliament soon. State governments have also been urged to send proposals regarding this pressing issue, while non-profit bodies have been requested to help create better awareness about traffic rules.
