Key Highlights
- The 30 Scorpios were delivered to Mozambique's Interior Ministry
- The delivery coincided with the Prime Minister's visit to Mozambique
- The Scorpio is already exported to several markets across Africa
India delivered 30 Mahindra Scorpio SUVs to Mozambique last week, completing the $4.5 million grant assistance on behalf of the country as part of supporting the institutions in the nation. The delivery was made to Mozambique's Interior Ministry and coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the African country as part of his four nation tour. Interestingly, the Prime Minister also handed over four buses to Centre for Innovation and Technological Development (CIDT) as donation from India.
Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Vikas Swarup tweeted saying "With handing over of 30 Mahindra SUVs, India completes delivery on $ 4.5 million grant assistance to Ministry of Interior." Addressing the Indian community in Mozambique, the PM in his brief speech said that Africa is such a land that shaped the identity of Indians in the world. Reliving a piece from history, Modi even travelled the from Pentrich to the Pietermaritzburg railway station in South Africa, the route on which a young Mahatma Gandhi was thrown out of a compartment in 1893 for refusing to move to the third class compartment from a first class one, due to racial discrimination.
As for the Mahindra Scorpios, the 30 SUVs delivered are the pre-facelift models that were upgraded in India back in 2014. One of Mahindra's most popular SUVs, the Scorpio has been a consistent seller over the years, and continues to retain its stronghold in the segment, despite new competition entering this space.
On the India spec version, the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine powers the outgoing Mahindra Scorpio tuned to produce 120bhp and 280Nm of torque. The oil burner is paired to a 5-speed manual and automatic transmission options. The Delhi-NCR region though gets the 1.99-litre diesel version with manual and transmission options, in order to counter the diesel ban.
