Government Has Supported 1.65 lakhs EVs Under FAME II Scheme; Over 2,800 Charging Stations Have Been

- About 1.65 lakh EVs were supported under the Phase II of the FAME
- Government also sanctioned 2,877 EV charging stations under the scheme
- Also 6,315 electric buses were sanctioned to various STUs under FAME II
The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) recently announced that it has supported about 1.65 lakh electric vehicles in India under the Phase II of the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and EV) scheme. The ministry says that as of November 25, 2021, the government has offered subsidies to electric vehicles by way of Demand Incentive amounting to about Rs. 564.00 crore. Additionally, the government has sanctioned 6,315 electrical buses to various State/City Transport Undertakings under the Phase-II of the FAME scheme.

The ministry says that it has also sanctioned 2,877 electric vehicles (EVs) charging stations, amounting to Rs. 500 crore (Approx.) in 68 cities across 25 States/UTs. In addition to that, 1,576 charging stations, amounting to Rs. 108 crores (approx.), were sanctioned across 9 Expressways and 16 Highways under the same Phase II of the FAME scheme.

The FAME scheme was first formulated in March 2015, and the first phase was available until March 31, 2019. During the first phase, about 2.8 lakh hybrid and electric vehicles were supported by way of demand incentive, amounting to about Rs. 359 crore. MHI had also sanctioned 425 electric and hybrid buses to various cities in the country with a total cost of about Rs. 280 Crores. The Ministry of Heavy Industries had sanctioned about 520 Charging Stations/ Infrastructure for Rs. 43 Crore (approx.) under Phase-I of the FAME India Scheme.

The FAME II scheme came into effect for 5 years, from April 1, 2019, with total budgetary support of Rs. 10,000 crores

Based on the outcome and experience gained during Phase-I of FAME India, the government announced Phase-II of the FAME India Scheme on March 8, 2019, which came into effect for 5 years, from April 1, 2019, with total budgetary support of Rs. 10,000 crores. This phase focuses on supporting electrification of public and shared transportation and aims to support, through subsidies (approx.) 7000 e-Buses, 5 lakh e-3 Wheelers, 55,000 e-4 Wheeler Passenger Cars and 10 lakh e-two-wheelers. In addition, the creation of charging infrastructure is also supported to address range anxiety among users of electric vehicles.
