Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister, Maharashtra, not only inaugurated the new production facility, but also drove out the first GLA-Class made by the company in Pune. Also present on the occasion were Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister, Environment, Forest & Climate Change, and Subhash Desai, Industry Minister, Maharashtra along with the top-brass from Mercedes-Benz India.
Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, said, "Rolling out our first ever locally manufactured GLA and commencing production from India's largest installed luxury car production facility are two very significant accomplishments for Mercedes-Benz in India. Our endeavours are all driven by our customer centric approach, as we believe in creating enhanced value for them. The GLA has been a sensation in the compact luxury SUV market and witnessed an increasing demand from across the markets. The GLA would be the first of the New Generation Cars to be rolling out of our plant. Mercedes-Benz India is on the right growth path and we are confident that we are creating a better future for the brand in India."
Though the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is offered with 2 engine options, namely a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.1-litre diesel, only the diesel GLA-CLass will be assembled in the country for now. The inline, 4-cylinder diesel engine with turbocharging and direct injection is mated to a 7-speed ducal clutch transmission. The GLA 200 CDI returns a claimed mileage of 17.9Km/l, thus making it the most fuel-efficient SUV in the segment.
