Maruti Suzuki Swift Outsells The Alto In April 2017; Baleno Comes In 3rd
- The Maruti Alto is usually the most selling model in India every month
- Maruti Suzuki sold 17,530 units of the Baleno in April 2017
- The i20, Grand i10 and Creta were the top selling cars from Hyundai
The Maruti Suzuki Alto is India's most popular car and the model certainly dominates the sales chart every month as the most selling car. However, once in a while, the Alto faces competition from its older siblings that manage to outsell the little hatchback and this time it is the Maruti Suzuki Swift that has sold more than the Alto. In April 2017, the Maruti pushed 23,802 units of the Swift, while 22,549 units of the Alto were sold. While the difference is of 1253 units, it's not every month that the Alto gets beaten.

The Swift still remains one of the most popular hatchbacks in the country
The sudden surge in Swift sales is certainly overwhelming but not exactly clear why. That said, it is likely that the company has finally made space to produce more Swifts, since the old Dzire is now limited to the commercial Dzire Tour variant.

The previous generation Swift Dzire is now sold as the Dzire Tour
Compared to March 2017, the Swift has seen over 53 per cent growth in April, while sales have been up by 62 per cent on a year-on-year basis. Meanwhile, Alto sales have been higher by 16 per cent over March 2017, while year-on-year sales have up by a healthy 36 per cent for the hatchback. Interestingly, the Alto was the most selling model in April 2016 followed by the Swift as the second best.
Both the Swift and Alto are popular models for Maruti Suzuki and are usually part of the top five selling models every month. However, Maruti's Baleno managed to break into this space as the third most selling model last month. The Indian automaker sold 17,530 units of its premium hatchback in April, witnessing a whopping 83.3 per cent growth over April 2016. With Baleno's production shifted to Gujarat, Maruti seems to be finally address the high demand for its premium offering.

The Wagon R was the fourth most selling model in April this year
Speaking about the other top selling models, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R stood fourth with 16,348 units sold in April 2017, while the Hyundai i20 came in fifth with 15,323 units pushed out. Sales of the i20 have been grew by 13.6 per cent over last year, a healthy hike despite the tough competition from Baleno.
The Vitara Brezza remains India's top selling SUV
Hyundai also managed to hold on to the sixth place with the Grand i10 having sold 12,001 units in April this year. The hatchback received a facelift earlier this year and has kept the model fresh amidst rivals. Meanwhile, the Vitara Brezza was the 7th bestselling model in April with 10,653 units, followed by the much expensive Hyundai Creta finishing 8th with 9213 units sold. Both SUVs cater to an overwhelming number of customers every month and the demand just does not seem to dip.
In last spots, the Maruti Dzire was the 9th most selling model with 8606 unit shipped out, while in 10th place was Maruti once again with 8425 units sold of the Celerio.
