- Tata Motors is yet to take a final call on the future of the Nano.
- The Nano is unlikely to survive the upcoming safety norms.
- The stringent safety norms will require it to be redesigned from scratch.
Tata Motors has not produced a single unit of its most affordable car - the Nano - in the last three months. According to a report in PTI, Tata Motors has not sold a single unit of the Nano in March 2019. The company is yet to take a call on the future of the Nano, chances of it surviving the upcoming crash test norms are slim. The stringent safety norms will require the Nano to be redesigned from scratch which will not be possible without fresh investment.

Tata Motors has been witnessing a weak demand for the Nano for quite sometime. Last year, in the same month the company had sold just 29 units of the Nano and had manufactured just 31. Moreover, the company did not export a single unit of the Nano in the last financial year. However, Tata Motors is still tight-lipped about any final decision on the Nano. Speaking to PTI, a spokesperson from the company said, "Decisions on product life cycle is a holistic view taken after considering the market developments, regulations and emerging competitive landscape. Any such decisions are announced as and when it's taken. Production planning of a car is conscious management of demand, system inventory and planned efficiencies. Therefore, speculating on the fate of a car based on a month's production figure is something the company would not like to participate in."
According to earlier news reports, Tata Motors is planning to axe the Nano form its line up in 2020 as the company did not plan to invest further into the model.
