No doubt, the automobile industry of India has made great progress in the past few years. But these are the ten cars that made the Indian automotive industry highly popular among people.
Hindustan Ambassador
Well, the Hindustan Ambassador is one such car that no one can forget. This car was so popular that it was an integral part of ministers' cavalcade. It rolled out on the Indian roads in 1958 and made the Indian automotive industry highly successful. However, Hindustan Motors discontinued its production in 2014.

Maruti Omni
The Maruti Omni was popular as the kidnappers' car. But jokes apart, you can still see Maruti Omni ferrying sick people on ambulances. The Omni was discontinued in 2019 on the grounds of emission norms.
Premier Padmini
You can consider the Premier Padmini as the car in line to compete directly with the ambassador. In case you don't know, the Premier Padmini is a rebadge of the Fiat 1100. Premier Padmini came to Indian roads in 1964. However, the production was discontinued in 2000.

Maruti 800
The Maruti 800 can still be seen in a majority of remote areas in India. To be precise, this was the first car that introduced the concept of the hatchback in India. Maruti 800 was introduced in the Indian market in 1986. However, the production of Maruti 800 was stopped in 2014.
Maruti Gypsy
Maruti Gypsy became pretty popular because of its off-roading capabilities. It is pretty common to see Maruti Gypsy among the armed forces nowadays. Introduced in 1985, the Maruti Gypsy ruled the Indian roads for three decades.

Tata Safari
Back in those old days, Tata Safari was the ultimate SUV which most people dreamt of buying. What made Tata Safari popular was its appeal. However, the Tata Safari was discontinued in 2019 so that it could be launched with BS6 engines.
Tata Sumo
To be precise, you will still come across Tata Sumo in many places in India. If you have ever been to the hills, this car is pretty difficult to miss. Tata Sumo also served India as a rugged military vehicle.
Mahindra Bolero
It is quite common to see the Mahindra Bolero gracing various types of terrains to date. Like the Sumo, Mahindra Bolero was a popular transport option in the hilly areas.
Tata Indica
The Tata Indica was launched in 1998, and since then, it has continued to enjoy great success. Apart from a hatchback, it was ideal as a taxi. The production of Tata Indica was discontinued in 2018.
Maruti Versa
The Maruti Versa is an ideal MPV that conquered the Indian automotive market. Nowadays, we can see the Eeco gracing the Indian roads. The Eeco is a rebadged version of the Maruti Versa.
