Highlights

  • The BMW M4 Competition Convertible gets a soft-top instead of a hardtop.
  • The soft-top is 40 per cent lighter than the hardtop in its predecessor.
  • It gets a 3.0-litre engine and does the 0-100 kmph sprint in 3.7 seconds.

BMW has unveiled the new M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive which is essentially a drop-top version of the recently unveiled M4 Competition M xDrive. The 2022 model year M4 Competition Convertible is lighter and comparatively more powerful than its predecessor. That said, the major difference here is that this convertible saved weight using a soft-top fabric roof instead of the hardtop roof seen in its predecessor and it also gets an extra axle. Now BMW says that the new soft-top is 40 per cent lighter when compared to the hardtop seen on the outgoing model.

The soft-top is 40 per cent lighter than the hardtop in its predecessor.

As far as the standard 4 Series Convertible is concerned, the soft-top operates in 18 seconds and up to speeds of 50 kmph. Then it also keeps a check on the heat loss and cabin noise with the use of a glass rear window and panel bow structural elements. Under the hood, it gets a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine that puts out around 498 bhp and 650 Nm of peak torque and is mated to an eight-speed step-tronic gearbox. It enables this M4 to clock triple-digit speeds in just 3.7 seconds, making it just 0.2 seconds slower than the M4 Competition M xDrive Coupe. Moreover, its top-speed is restricted at 280 kmph. Even this one is a 2+2 seater and gets an Air Collar system as standard that directs warm air to passengers' necks and heads in a bid to maximise comfort when driving with roof down.

BMW also claims that the fabric roof saves 80 litres more boot space when stowed compared to the hardtop used in its predecessor. It helps in giving the car a roof-down luggage space of 300 litres. Standard equipment in the BMW M4 Competition M xDrive includes electrically adjustable heated sports seats while carbon-fibre bucket seats are offered as optional. The convertible is also equipped with three-zone automatic climate control, LED interior lighting and a Harman Kardon sound system as standard. Now the new M3 and M4 are yet to go on sale in India and we don't have any final word from BMW on its India arrival, as yet.
