2022 Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid SUV Unveiled; Bookings Open
Key Highlights

Toyota has finally revealed the Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid SUV. The first model from Toyota under the brand's partnership with Maruti Suzuki, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder has been seen testing on Indian roads for a while now and was accompanied by its Maruti Suzuki counterpart too, which is expected to break cover in the festive season. The SUV is underpinned by a Toyota platform, and will be manufactured by Toyota in its plant in Karnataka, unlike the Urban Cruiser and the Glanza, which are manufactured by Maruti Suzuki. Pre-bookings for the compact SUV are now open for the amount of Rs. 25,000.

Toyota's first compact SUV for the Indian market, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder has a rather modern and bold look. Up front, twin stripe LED DRLs take place of the traditional headlamps, while the headlamps are placed lower into the bumper as is the trend on compact SUVs. The grille at the top is covered with a carbon fibre like finish, while there's a large airdam lower at the front end. The rear of the compact SUV has ample use of chrome with a thick chrome strip in the middle, flanked by LED taillamp which have dual C-shaped inserts. The design of the SUV is somewhat in the middle of the design language of Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, and bears the DNA of both the Japanese manufacturers. The SUV also features 17-inch alloy wheels. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder will be launched with 7 single-tone colour options, including Cafe White, Enticing Silver, Sporting Red, Speedy Blue, Gaming Grey, Midnight Black, and Cave Black, the first 4 of which will also be offered in dual-tone colour options, coupled with Midnight Black.

The compact SUV has a dual tone interior, and the dash includes the use of leather as well as plastics. A 9-inch touch screen takes the centre stage on the dash, and there's also a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a head up display. Other features in the car include a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, reclining rear seats, rear AC vents, wireless phone charging, connected car tech, and much more. Safety features on the SUV include 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, disc-brakes on all 4 corners, 360-degree camera, hill hold control, hill descend (only in AWD), and stability control.

Speaking about the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Vikram Kirloskar, Vice Chairman, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “Toyota has always been guided by the strong commitment to build a sustainable community, living in harmony with nature. One of our key focuses is to shift towards low-carbon energy sources and provide practical and sustainable mobility solutions, in support of various ambitious national goals."

Masakazu Yoshimura, Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “Today, with over two million satisfied customers, our focus in India continues to be the introduction of advanced products that are safer and cleaner and a good match for the energy mix of the country. Achieving Carbon Neutrality has always been the biggest challenge before us. Towards which, fighting against carbon will require multiple technology pathways and our latest offering is another step in that direction". Speaking about the segment and Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Tadashi Asazuma Executive Vice President, Sales & Customer Service, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “At Toyota, we always bring in models based on our studies on consumer preferences and industry trends. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder, the first of its kind Self-charging Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle in the segment, is aimed at delivering exemplary performance, best in class fuel efficiency, quick acceleration, and a smooth drive."

The Urban Cruiser Hyryder arrives with two petrol drivetrains, both of which have the same displacement at 1.5-litres. The differentiator between the two engines is the hybrid tech supporting it. The lower variants will be sold with a 1.5-litre K-series engine sourced from Maruti Suzuki, which has mild-hybrid tech derived from an integrated starter motor generator (ISG). This engine puts out 100 bhp and 135 Nm of peak torque, and will be paired with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The other drivetrain is powered by the Toyota developed 1.5-litre TNGA engine equipped with THS (Toyota Hybrid System), and e-drive transmission. The engine has a standalone output of 91 bhp and 122 Nm of torque, and is assisted by an electric motor which has an output of 79 bhp and 141 Nm of instant torque. Combined, the hybrid engine puts out 113 bhp. Toyota also claims that the strong hybrid variant of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder will have best in class fuel economy figures, and the hybrid variants will have the ability to be driven in EV only mode too.
