BMW i4 Electric Sedan To Make Its India Debut On April 28; Launch By Mid-2022

The all-electric BMW i4 sedan will make its India debut on April 28, 2022. The information was revealed on the sidelines of the India art fair, where the Bavarian carmaker has showcased the one-off iX - 'The Future is Born of Art' car, designed by artist Faiza Hasan. The i4 electric sedan will be the second BMW branded electric vehicle (EV) to be launched in India, and the third EV overall from the BMW Group when we consider the recently launched MINI Electric.

Back when BMW India launched the iX electric SUV in December 2021, the company has said that the i4 will be launched in the next 6 months. Considering the timeline, we would say that the electric sedan will be launched in India around May or June 2022. Globally, the BMW i4 is offered in two variants - eDrive40 Gran Coupe and the sportier M50 sedan, and we expect the former to be offered first in India. With regards to its electric powertrain, the i4 comes with an 81.5 kWh battery pack that powers the electric motor to produce 330 bhp and 430 Nm of peak torque. BMW claims the i4 can offer a range of 483 km on a single charge according to the WLTP cycle.

As for the i4 M50, the performance-oriented model comes with dual electric motors, one mounted on each axle. This one also gets BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system and offers increased power of 529 bhp. The range is expected to be around 394 km. The BMW i4 can be charged using a Level 2 wall-box through AC power at 11 kilowatts, which can top up the battery to 100 per cent in 8 hours. With a DC fast charger, the electric sedan can charge at up to 200 kW, which will take about 10 minutes to give a range of 142 km.

The BMW i4 electric sedan is based on the new-gen 4 Series and comes with a similar design, however, the styling has been tweaked to enhance its EV nature. You get the large kidney grille, LED headlamps, optional blue accents, and the signature coupe roofline. As for the cabin, the car will come with a 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control screen that share a frameless bezel and appear as a single unit. The infotainment system runs the iDrive 8 software and supports over-the-air updates as well.
