Honda Cars India has released its monthly sales numbers for June 2021, and last month the Japanese carmaker's sales in the domestic market stood at 4,767 units. Compared to 2,032 units sold a month ago, in May 2021, the company witnessed month-on-month (MoM) volume growth of over 134 per cent. However, we cannot really compare the two months because several states had imposed lockdown or movement restrictions throughout May 2021 affecting cars sales. It was only in June that we started to see the lockdown being eased and showrooms opening.

A similar anomaly can be witnessed when we compare the company domestic sales from June 2020. In the same month a year ago, Honda Cars India sold 1,398 vehicles, compared to it the company's volumes increased more than three times in June 2021. However, last year in June, India was still coming out of a nationwide lockdown and both production and retails were heavily impacted. As for exports, Honda Cars India exported 1,241 units in the month of June 2021. In comparison, the company exported 385 units a month ago, in May 2021, and 142 units a year ago, in June 2020.

Commenting on the company's sales performance, Rajesh Goel, Sr. Vice President and Director, Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India Ltd said, "Our June despatches were in line with our production output, which we maintained at below 50 per cent of pre-COVID level. With the unlocking of many states and reopening of dealer outlets in most markets, we expect car sales to further pick up from this month onwards and will accordingly ramp up our daily production. We hope that this positive momentum will continue thereby helping the industry to recover, however challenges of COVID related disruptions and rising ownership cost due to higher raw material prices remain."
