Driver Sets World Record By Clocking 186Km/h On Two Wheels In A Car

A two-wheeled side wheelie might be one of the craziest things anyone ever does with the car but driving on two wheels at over 186km/h? How much fun is it really? Well, for Finnish stunt driver Vesa Kivimaki it's a big deal considering he's set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest two-wheeled side wheelie.

This is not the first time Kivimaki has attempted to do something like this and he knows how important tyres are in attempting such a feat. Considering that the car is tilted, all the burden of the weight of the car has to be managed by the sidewalls of the tyre and the use of conventional tyres would not have helped in making this attempt.

The BMW 335i Coupe was used to set a new record

This is where he turned to winter tyre specialist Nokian. The company uses a synthetic fibre called Aramid in the construction of some of its tyres which is strong and heat-resistant, so much so that it is used in ballistic composites. Nokian's Matti Morri said, "The passion and creative madness required for this world record attempt are also descriptive of Nokian's product development. We need to try new things and test our limits. Only this will allow us to develop safer, more durable tyres in the future."

The sidewall of the tyres are the most affected

These ultra-strong rally-spec tyres were then bolted onto Kivimaki's BMW 335i Coupe after and which the stunt driver went on to complete his record attempt. The record necessitated a run each way over a 100 metre course and completed within an hour. The previous record of 181.25 km/h was set by Swedish driver Goran Eliason, had stood since 1997 and this just shows how long it took to break it. Now, with the record under his belt at 186 km/h Kivimaki is a happy man and we're sure he'll be back soon to break his own record.
