- Porsche is aggressively ramping up its electrification program.
- The Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman will be full-electric by 2025.
- Will be based on the Porsche Mission R Concept.
Porsche is aggressively ramping up its electrification program, backed firmly on the robust sales of the Porsche Taycan, as the company recently announced that it delivered 41,296 units globally to date. The tremendous response for the flagship EV has compelled the company to add to its portfolio even more electric vehicles, especially to the 718 range that includes Boxster and Cayman which will be full-electric by 2025. Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG confirmed this by announcing that it's mid-engine 718 sports car will go all-electric by the middle of this decade.

Porsche's next EV would convert the 718 Boxster.

In 2021, Porsche delivered 3,01,915 vehicles to customers worldwide, exceeding the 3,00,000 mark for the very first time in the company's history. While the Porsche Macan and the Porsche Cayenne remained the best-sellers for the company, the sales for the Porsche Taycan doubled from 2020, even overtaking the overall sales of the iconic 911 sports car, with 38,464 units sold till date. Last year, almost 40 per cent of all new Porsche vehicles delivered in Europe were already either plug-in hybrids or fully electric models. The company aims to drive up almost 80 per cent of its overall sales from electric vehicles by end of this decade.

Even the Porsche Cayman will go under the electric knife.

Blume said, “To achieve these ambitious goals, Porsche is investing in premium charging stations together with partners – and additionally in its own charging infrastructure. Further extensive investments are flowing into core technologies such as battery systems and module production. In the newly founded Cellforce Group, high-performance battery cells are being developed and produced that are expected to be ready for series production by 2024.”

Porsche Mission R Concept would be the design base for the next EVs.

Not much is known about the electric 718 Cayman and Boxster, but it's likely that both the models will be underpinned by the Porsche Taycan. Reports suggest the Porsche Mission R Concept, yes, the one showed at IAA Munich 2021, would be the design base for the new electric models, albeit of course without the large rear spoiler and stripped-out interior in favour of a more road-oriented design. Porsche will also work on reducing the weight of the new EVs as it needs to perform at its optimum level on both road and track.
