How Do Self-Balancing Motorcycles Work?

We always talk about the revolutions in the four-wheeler industry. However, this article will explicitly cater to two-wheeler fans. If you've been into motorcycles for a while, you have come across self-balancing motorcycles.
Balancing is the most critical yet challenging part of driving a bike, and these self-balancing ones can help you beat that. You're not alone in wondering how these self-balancing motorcycles work. Here´s a hint – it doesn´t come with embarrassing safety wheels on both sides like the ones used for young learners. Let's take a look at the mechanism and working of a self-balancing motorcycle.
Honda's Self-Balancing Motorcycles
Honda is one of the first names to launch self-balancing motorcycles in the auto industry. These bikes have been in demand amongst both old and new riders. One of the popular self-balancing bikes is Honda's Riding Assist concept.
The automaker unveiled this bike almost five years ago in Las Vegas at a Consumer Electronics Show. You might be wondering about the secret behind these self-balancing motorcycles. The magic lies in the front fork, which is responsible for connecting the handlebars to the front wheels.
When you try to stop or slow down the bike, or when the bike is riding slower than four kph, the fork angle changes and brings the front wheel forward. This mechanism triggers the self-balancing system. It constantly keeps making minor side adjustments to maintain the bike's balance.
In contrast, a regular bike leans towards the direction of the front wheels. But with Honda's Self Assist bikes, the motorcycle leans on the opposite side. The automatic handlebar adjustments ensure that the bike is balanced at all times.

Why We Need Self-Balancing Motorcycles?
Most people who already know to drive a motorcycle might have second thoughts about whether they should go for a self-balancing bike or not. The truth is even the most seasoned bike riders face difficulties when it comes to balancing a heavy bike.
Especially when stopping at the traffic signal or slowing down the two-wheeler, balancing is a significant concern. Moreover, newbie riders might find it highly challenging to balance and ride on a 400-pound motorcycle. For such riders, the self-balancing mechanism is a boon.
The self-balancing mechanism is just one of the components of future bikes. You can consider the self-balancing mechanism equivalent to driving assistance systems in four-wheelers.

Other Self-Balancing Motorcycles
There are several models of self-balancing motorcycles available in the market. Besides Honda, other names like BMW and Harley Davidson are also putting their efforts into self-balancing mechanisms for bikes. The BMW Vision Next 100 model will use a completely different mechanism for its self-balancing variant.
