IAA Munich 2021: Mercedes EQE Revealed, Global Launch In Mid-2022

Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off the production spec model of the EQE, the second fully electric sedan, after the EQS. The EQE too is based on the EVA 2 platform, which also underpins the EQS. Global launch is scheduled for mid-2022.

Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQE electric luxury sedan. It is the second sedan to be based on the EVA2 or electric vehicle architecture platform. The sedan will be manufactured at Bremen for the global market and at Beijing for the Chinese market. The market launch of the sedan will happen in the middle of 2022. A glance at the EQE is enough to tell you that the car belongs to Mercedes' EQ range. The typical cab-forward design along with reduced joints and a seamless design offer a classic, yet elegant look. There's a sense of sportiness as well, with the short overhangs at the front and at the rear, coupled with a flush-fit rear spoiler.

The car gets a sporty coupe-like sloping roofline at the rear along with pronounced wheel arches and a sleek rear section. The car gets wheels varying from 19-inches to 21-inches, depending on the trim. In terms of space, Mercedes says it is comparable to the current-generation CLS. The wheelbase is 3,120 mm and the EQE gets an extra 27 mm shoulder room up front, extra 80 mm length and the seating position is 65 mm higher, when compared to the current generation E-Class. The boot capacity is a decent 430 litres. The interior design and equipment are clearly based on the EQS, with MBUX Hyperscreen, automatic comfort doors (front) and rear-axle steering, available as optional extras. In terms of noise and vibration comfort (NVH), Mercedes claims that the EQE is among the best in class.

The Mercedes EQE gets two electric motors, one each on the front and rear axle, making 215 kW and 530 Nm of peak torque. In addition, it gets a 90 kWh battery pack, with a range of 660 kilometres as tested according to WLTP. There will two models available at the time of launch, the EQE 350 and another unnamed model, with possibly better range. Mercedes says it is also planning performance variants of the EQE, with a motor of around 500 kW for the future.

Other features include the latest version of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, over-the-air (OTA) updates, two special driving modes, mini-games and a 'highlight mode', which allows users to create individual light animation. Mercedes will also offer the MBUX hyperscreen as an option, which is three screens merged into one large screen, running across the length of the dashboard, from A-pillar to the other A-pillar. Of course, there will be a long list of driving and safety systems as well. Mercedes also offers an 'energising air control package, which includes a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Filter) a display for the same and air conditioning.
