Highlights

  • MG received over 600 bookings for the ZS EV last month
  • Prices for 2021 MG ZS EV start at Rs. 20.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi)
  • MG ZS EV was launched in India in early 2020

MG Motor India has always been clear that its focus will be on SUVs and electrification, with regards to the Indian market. In the latest episode of Freewheeling with CNB, Rajeev Chaba, president and MD, MG Motor India told Siddharth Vinayak Patankar, editor-in-chief, carandbike, that MG received about 600 bookings for the ZS EV, which means that the Indian SUV customer is considering electric models for purchase, now more so than ever before. One of the reasons is the fact that OEMs are now providing better solutions to customers, which help them adapt better to new models, especially EVs.

In response to a question asked about the interest, awareness and right kind of demand for the ZS EV, Rajiv Chaba said, "There were a lot of naysayers, lot of scepticism about and lots of people asked us this question, why are you launching an EV as your second car, you are a new player, and nobody will buy an EV because no charging infrastructure and all that. And you see within one and a half years, what has happened. Just one and a half years! There is more and more enquiry; you have seen all kinds of surveys, global surveys, local surveys, and where 30-40 per cent consumers are saying that they are willing to look at an EV, and charging infrastructure, as long as you are giving your consumers the convenience of a charger at their home, 90-95 per cent of charging need is taken care of! Yes, obviously it will add to the infrastructure to your surroundings, your community, other areas also improve. But they (consumers) are happy with that starting point."

He further added saying, "And the government is also pushing a lot on the EV front. As an example, I will just take one data point of last month. We got 600 bookings, Tata Nexon (EV) is doing very well! I heard they got 900 or 1,000 bookings. So between the two of us (Tata and MG Motor India), we are doing in a month now, what was done in a year, two years back. I come back to one favourite point, I say it is a question of OEMs needing to provide more compelling solutions to consumers and if we provide solutions to consumers, they are ready to adapt. And obviously, infrastructure has to keep pace with it, so it has to happen together."
