New-Generation Honda Civic Type R Revealed

- New Civic Type R to go on sale in global markets by September 2022
- Will be second-ever Civic Type R to be sold in the US
- Retains the familiar 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, manual gearbox and front-wheel drive layout.
Honda has revealed the new generation of the Civic Type R ahead of its global launch by the end of the year. The new Type R follows the understated design on the new 11th Generation Civic but with a number of design and mechanical upgrades to accompany its enhanced performance. Honda says that the new gen model has been engineered to “deliver thrilling performance with an addictive driving experience – both on road and on the racetrack.”
Starting with he looks, the front bumper sports a more aggressive look with the mesh design grille housing the Type R badge and the red Honda logo. The bonnet too is new and seems to feature a vent to help improve airflow in and out of the engine bay. The wheel arch flares are more prominent than on the standard model with a vent placed behind the front wheels. A sportier side skirt and 19-inch wheels add to the sporting look.
Large rear wing and central triple exhaust a design element shared with outgoing model
Round the back, this generation of the Type R too retains the prominent rear wing and central triple exhaust – a design also seen on the outgoing model. The rear bumper also gets a sporty diffuser element and vents on the sides.
As with the past generation, the new Type R is again only available as a hatchback.
Cabin gets sportier design touches such as metallic finished pedals, sports seats and red upholstery
The cabin design is unchanged from the standard Civic though its now upholstered in black and red. The central touchscreen and digital instrument cluster get Type R specific graphics and there’s a Type R logo also positioned on the passenger side of the dashboard. Up front the new Type R gets sports seats wrapped in suede-like upholstery that the company says provides additional grip and prevents occupants from slipping in their seats.
Honda has confirmed that the new Civic Type R gets an upgraded version of the 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder mill from the outgoing model. Honda says that the unit is even more powerful and responsive than on the outgoing model with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox also having been upgraded and getting a revv-matching feature. The company though has yet to reveal complete specifications for the new Type R.
2.0-litre turbo-petrol upgraded over the outgoing model though Honda is yet to reveal output.
Honda has also confirmed that the new Civic Type R will be sold in the US market as well – just the second ever Civic Type R to do so. Honda did not offer the previous-gen Civic Type R in the US instead with the country getting the more toned-down Civic Si sedan.
