Next-Gen Land Rover Discovery Sport Spotted Testing For The First Time

- The Land Rover Discovery Sport replaced the Freelander 2
- The next-gen Discovery Sport will be introduced before 2020
- The Land Rover Discovery Sport is built on the latest D8 platform
It's been about three years since the launch of the Land Rover Discovery Sport and surprisingly, it seems like the Tata Motors-owned British carmaker has already started working on the next-generation model. Recently a prototype of what is believed to be the next-generation Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV was spotted testing and it appears to be in the early stages of testing. Interestingly the current-gen model itself hasn't received it mid-life facelift yet, which is expected to be introduced sometime around end of 2018. This means that the test mule of the new Discovery Sport that Land Rover is working on is still something far into the future and we do not expect to see it any time before 2020.

Next-Gen Land Rover Discovery Sport will see some changes in dimensions
While visually speaking, this test mule of the Land Rover Discovery might not look very different from the current model there are certain attributes that indicate this is the new Discovery Sport wearing the skin of the current one. The remodelling of the fuel cap tells us that it is likely going to be relocated. Also, the exhaust system looks a bit out of the place compared to the rear bumper design, which is another indication the SUV is in the early stages of development and is different under the skin.

Land Rover Discovery Sport might get a plug-in version as well
Considering it's built on the company latest D8 platform, we do not expect to see any structural changes, apart from maybe revised dimensions and reworked suspension. Although, Land Rover might be introducing a set of new powertrains and we are pretty sure we'll see an electric or a plug-in version of the SUV as well. Right now, the SUV is powered by 2-litre Si4 petrol and the 2-litre TD4 diesel engine both from the Ingenium family.
Land Rover launched the Discovery Sport to replace the Freelander 2 as the company's most affordable SUV, and it has been on sale globally since early 2015. Land Rover Discovery Sport rivals the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, Audi Q5 and the likes in the segment.
