Planning To Buy A Used First Generation Hyundai i20 (2008-2015): 5 Things To Know

The Hyundai i20 paved the way for premium hatchbacks in India as far as mainstream success is concerned. Few know that the model originally started as a low-volume offering but its unprecedented success made it one of the most successful models to come from the manufacturer. Now in its third generation, the i20 continues to be a strong seller and is even more loaded on the feature and performance front. So, if you are in the market for a feature-laden premium hatchback, the first generation i20 (2008-2015) remains an apt choice and despite its age, it is quite relevant even today. Here are five things you need to know about buying a pre-owned first-generation Hyundai i20.
1. The first-generation Hyundai i20 looks stylish even today and there is an abundance of them on the road which make them quite relevant by all standards. The cabin layout is thought out and all controls feel good to touch. It can also accommodate five in comfort with a large boot to spare.
2. Finding early examples in the used car market is easy and there are options ranging from the 1.2-litre petrol to the 1.4-litre diesel. There was also a more powerful 1.4-litre petrol engine on offer with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The diesel engine came paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and was known to be an efficient unit.
3. The 2008-2015 Hyundai i20 was known to have cheap plastic quality and that will show in some examples. Look out for broken air vents, flimsy gear knobs, and broken switches.
4. The first i20 had nearly dead steering and while the latest generation version has come a long way from that, the older models were a far cry from that. If you are looking for a driver-oriented hatchback, this model may not be the aptest choice. At the same time, the car offered good ride quality but do look out for sagging suspension with age-related issues.
5. The first generation Hyundai i20 is available for as low as Rs. 2 lakh, depending on the variant. The diesel versions are about Rs. 50,000 more expensive. Finding a good example can last you easily 3-4 years without too much stress. Do look out for the facelift that arrived in 2012, which will hold better value through your ownership period.
