Highlights

Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIPL) has launched the Suzuki Katana in India, priced at Rs. 13.61 lakh (Ex-showroom).  The Suzuki Katana is assembled in India from completely knocked down kits (CKD) and will be offered in a choice of two colour options, Metallic Mat Stellar Blue, and Metallic Mystic Silver. The name Katana is derived from the Japanese sword of the same name, and the Suzuki Katana was first launched in 1981.

The new Suzuki Katana is based on the Suzuki GSX-S1000F and powered by the 999 cc, liquid-cooled, inline four-cylinder, DOHC K5 engine which puts out 150 bhp at 11,000 rpm and 106 Nm at 9,250 rpm. In terms of design, the Suzuki Katana has a more neo-retro design, which is stylish, yet with comfortable ergonomics which should make it easier to ride in everyday conditions in India.

Commenting on the launch, Satoshi Uchida, Managing Director, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd. said, “We feel proud to announce the launch of the Katana in India. The Katana reflects Suzuki’s ongoing commitment to fine craftsmanship and its willingness to sweat every detail to get them right. The launch is a part of our strategy to solidify our big bike portfolio in the country. We received a lot of queries from motorcycle enthusiasts after showcasing the Katana in the last auto expo. It is basis the positive feedback of our potential customers that we decided to introduce the Katana in India. We are confident that the Katana will be able to make its own cult following in India too.”

The Suzuki Katana gets the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) which comes with a variety of advanced electronic control systems. The S.I.R.S. features Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS), Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS), Ride-By-Wire Electronic Throttle System, Low RPM assist, and Suzuki Easy Start System. Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) offers a wide selection of 5 mode settings and is switchable.

The Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) is designed to offer a choice between three different modes that change output characteristics, especially when turning the throttle grip between a slightly open position to when it reaches the top of the mid-speed range under acceleration to match riding conditions or preferences. Mode A (Active) is the mode of choice when the rider wants to put the finest edge on their KATANA's performance. Mode B (Basic) reaches the same level of maximum output, but features softer response and a more linear power delivery curve as the rider opens the throttle.  Mode C (Comfort) provides the softest throttle response and more gentle torque characteristics, delivering power in smoother linear fashion while still reaching the same level of maximum power output.

Low RPM Assist suppresses engine stalls and helps ensure better control and operation in stop-and-go traffic. Suzuki Easy Start System enables the rider to start the engine with one quick press. The Suzuki Katana has a kerb weight of 217 kg and comes with a 12-litre fuel tank. The Katana gets an upside down fork, with 17-inch wheels, with a 120 mm wide front tyre and a 160-section rear tyre. Braking is handled by Brembo-sourced calipers. The price tag makes the Suzuki Katana an attractive proposition, and in India, it competes against the likes of the BMW S 1000 R and the Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX.
