Toll Plazas Within 60 Km Of Other Booths To Be Closed In Next 3 Months: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari has announced that all toll collection booths, which are active within 60 kilometre distance of any other toll booth, will be shut down in the next three months. Gadkari made this announcement at the Lok Sabha while replying on the Demands for Grants for Road Transport and Highways Ministry for 2022-23. The Union Minister said that there aren't supposed to be any toll collection points within 60 kilometres of two toll booths on the National Highways. However, there are such toll booths that are currently active, and Gadkari has assured that these illegal toll points will be shut down soon.

Talking about these toll booths, Gadkari said, "What's happening is wrong and illegal. I assure you that within the next three months, within 60 km, there will be only one toll collection point, if there's a second one, we will shut it down. Just because we (government) get money from them, doesn't mean people should suffer."

The clip of Nitin Gadkari's speech was posted on the official Twitter handle of his office, and soon Twitterati started pouring in with comments about all the illegal toll collection centres in their areas. One user pointed out that there are three toll plazas between Talapady and Kundapura on National Highway 66 for a distance of about 90 km. At the same time, others pointed out that few toll plazas within city limits are much closer to each other, and local residents of such areas should get a pass for these toll booths.

Gadkari in his speech also said that people residing close to toll plazas will be able to get toll passes by showing their Aadhar cards.
