Royal Enfield's monthly sales in May 2021 reflect the challenges faced by the automobile industry as lockdowns across several states and regions continue as India battles the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. In May 2021, Royal Enfield reported sales of just 20,073 units in the domestic market, slipping 58.8 per cent from 48,789 units sold in April 2021. In fact, last year, in May 2020, sales were even lower due to the lockdown imposed in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, when Royal Enfield had recorded sales of just 18,429 units.

Exports account for only a fraction of overall sales, but sales in overseas markets have been growing steadily

The only silver lining for Royal Enfield is that sales in overseas markets. In May 2021, Royal Enfield exported 7,221 motorcycles, which is a whopping 956 per cent gain over May 2020. Exports in May 2021 is still an impressive 60 per cent growth over exports in April 2021, when Royal Enfield registered exports of 4,509 motorcycles. Overall, Royal Enfield motorcycle volumes registered 27,294 units in May 2021, recording 43 per cent growth over May 2020 volumes, when Royal Enfield had despatched just 19,113 motorcycles. However, month-on-month Royal Enfield's overall volumes fell by 49 per cent in May 2021, at 27,294 units, compared to 53,298 units sold in April 2021.

2020 marked a new chapter for Royal Enfield as it expanded globally amidst challenging conditions

With many states and regions still under lockdown as restrictions are now extended to June 2021, sales are likely to be affected this month as well. Royal Enfield is gearing up to introduce an all-new, updated model of the Classic 350, which will be based on the new platform of the Meteor 350. With a new and updated model planned of the brand's bestselling Classic 350 model, domestic sales are likely to see an uptick after the launch and deliveries begin of the 2021 Classic 350. Going forward, Royal Enfield will also be focusing on increasing global sales, so performance in exports is also expected to strengthen further.
