Using High Beam Headlights- Preferred Etiquette

- 1. Know about the reasons for high-beam light usage.
- 2. Using high-beam lights amidst the fog.
- 3. Low beam and tail light usage guidelines
Indian drivers mostly keep using high-beam headlights. Why are they used? They enable clearer views of light at night and also for zones where light sources are scarce, with lower traffic as well. This means that low beam headlights should be used in case any vehicle is stationed within 200 metres of your car. It applies whenever vehicles come from the opposite direction or moves just ahead of you. In both these scenarios, other individuals may be suddenly blinded and this should be strictly avoided, since it may lead to accidents and other mishaps.

Should these lights be used while driving in fog?
Fog is usually a reason behind slow-crawling traffic. Many people turn on their high-beam headlights while driving amidst fog and pouring rain. This is not recommended since the light is reflected by droplets, leading to higher glare. The glare may lead to sudden distractions for drivers with horrific results. It also applies if there is any snow or rain.
Are there penalties to look out for?
The rules state that headlights should be downward-facing without dazzling anyone suddenly. The law states that applicable distances should be 8 metres, and 0.5 metres from the front and right of the lamps respectively. The height restrictions are 1.5 metres from the car's supporting plane. Fines and penalties are likewise applicable for violators.
Which lights should you choose?
You should only use high-beam headlights on the highways or zones which have lower traffic volumes, while there is no vehicle within a 200-metre range.
Should you use low-beam lights?
You can use low-beam lights while driving at night, based upon prevalent rules of road safety, especially amidst rain, fog, snow, and also when there is sufficient lighting on the road. Tail lights are compulsory for all public areas, half an hour after the advent of sunset. This is also applicable whenever light is insufficient within a 155-metre distance.

Keep these tips in mind before you venture out at night or also amidst fog or heavy rain. Make sure that you abide by all road safety regulations.
