If you've read our Volkswagen Tiguan review, then you'd know that the new generation of the car is just the beginning. Volkswagen is working on a range of SUVs for its global markets and the Tiguan is a starting point. Furthering their commitment to the SUV segment is a concept from the German car maker, which has been introduced in Beijing. It's called the T-Prime Concept GTE and this one paves the way for a full-size SUV packed with loads of technology.

It was a couple of years ago that Volkswagen had introduced the T-Roc concept which will morph into a Golf-sized production crossover and even at the Geneva Motor Show this year we saw the T-Cross which is a Polo-class crossover. In fact the Tiguan will also be available in the seven-seat format and hence the concept shows off what the high-end SUVs from the company will look like.

The T-Prime Concept GTE described as one of the most advanced cars in the world. The look of the car is imposing and the wide chrome front grille helps in bringing out this look. Adding to this are the flared wheel arches housing massive 22-inch wheels.

The concept is actually a bit longer the Phaeton and the C-shaped LED daytime running lights are a signature of the GTE moniker and we've seen it on the Passat GTE as well. So, yes the T-Prime concept is a plug-in hybrid. Light-emitting diodes were also used for both headlight and taillight clusters to give the SUV a high-tech look. The cabin too is a bit futuristic and is good for four people. It has individual rear seats and offers plenty of shoulder room and headroom for both front and rear passengers.

There is a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15-inch curved touchscreen for the infotainment system. The steering wheel has touch sensitive controls and that basically tells you that the car is future ready. But this is not all, beside the two large screens up front, there's a 9.6-inch display surface mounted in the back between the two seats. This helps the passengers at the rear to adjust the seats and air-coon using touch-sensitive controls.

The T-Prime Concept GTE rides on the MLB platform that underpins the Audi Q7 and even the Bentley Bentayga. Under the hood is a 2.0-litre, 4 cylinder engine punching out 248bhp and developing 370Nm of torque. It's a GTE and hence there's an electric engine which works together with the petrol one. The electric engine adds 134bhp to the equation to enable a combined output of 375bhp, while the torque figure stands at 699Nm of torque. The eight-speed automatic gearbox channels the power to all four wheels thanks to the all-wheel-drive 4MOTION system which features a limited-slip differential built into the automatic transmission.

The T-Prime concept will soon make its way to production and we'll soon see the face of VWs SUV line-up change, for the best of course. The Tiguan will come to India next year and we might see a production version of the T-Cross soon too but we'll wait for Volkswagen to give us the details.
