Volkswagen Taigun Tales: A Modular Platform For A Game Changing Product

Volkswagen India promised to rattle the players in the compact SUV segment with the Taigun, but as you all know that is not an easy task because there are a whole bunch of reputed players with a good amount of fan following. So how could Volkswagen get a stronghold on the market? Well, the answer was a simple one – ‘Stick to the basics, and retain its DNA’. Easier said than done frankly, but Volkswagen, put its years of engineering capability to the test and improvised on the existing MQB platform, to come with something that was built specifically for the Indian market and voila! It was the MQB-A0 IN. A modular platform, that can spawn different body types so that the company can cater to the fast-changing needs of the Indian customers.
Having invested Rs. 8000 crore in its Chakan facility to make it ready for the made-in-India for the world Taigun, the company’s expectations from the SUV were huge and it has stayed true to that. With its genesis in the MQB A0-IN platform, VW had the capability of making the Taigun stand out amidst the crowd. The Taigun, though compact, gets the best in segment wheelbase (2651mm) and that’s a number no one else has been able to beat.
Having the longest wheelbase in the segment, the Taigun has more space for people in the car and that also means that the rear seat space is very comfortable for even tall people. Given that the central tunnel is to an extent curbed and almost flat, the space at the rear can easily seat 5 people without any of them having to inconvenience themselves.
Another key aspect is safety and the company has been able to offer the Taigun with up to 6 airbags while features like ABS with EBD, brake assist, multi-collision braking system, ISOFIX anchorage for child seats and more. With that box ticked, the company even brought in fuel efficient turbo-petrol engines. While the 1-litre provides 19.20 kmpl, the 1.5-litre motor is good enough for 18.47 kmpl. The Taigun then is a very compelling case made by Volkswagen in the compact SUV segment and with its service packages, it’s an SUV that you don’t have to think twice about to put your money on!
