The Maruti Suzuki’s Story & History in India
Maruti Suzuki's journey in India began in 1981, when the Government of India set up Maruti Udyog Limited. The idea was to build an affordable car for the country's growing middle class. In 1982, the government entered into a joint venture with Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation, bringing Suzuki's manufacturing experience to India. That partnership went on to become the Maruti Suzuki Indian buyers know today.
The Maruti 800, launched in 1983, played a huge role in the company's early success. It soon became a familiar sight on Indian roads and brought car ownership within reach of many more families. Models such as the Alto and Wagon R followed later and went on to become some of the country's longest-running nameplates.
Maruti gradually moved into other segments instead of staying with small hatchbacks. The Swift, Dzire, Ertiga, Brezza and Grand Vitara helped the company reach buyers with different needs. Then came NEXA, giving Maruti a separate premium retail channel for models such as the Baleno, Fronx, Jimny and Invicto.
The Government of India slowly reduced its stake in the company. Maruti Suzuki was publicly listed in 2003, and the government exited completely by 2007. Suzuki Motor Corporation is now the majority shareholder. Maruti has also worked with Toyota in India on product development, technology sharing and manufacturing, resulting in models such as the Grand Vitara and Invicto.
Maruti Suzuki now has manufacturing plants in Gurugram and Manesar in Haryana and Hansalpur in Gujarat. Its newer facility at Kharkhoda in Haryana adds more production capacity and is designed as a next-generation manufacturing plant. The company has recorded annual production of more than 23.4 lakh units, underlining the size of its manufacturing operations.
Today, Maruti Suzuki continues to focus on affordable and efficient cars while moving into newer segments. Its range includes petrol, CNG, strong-hybrid and electric powertrains. The e Vitara marks the company's entry into India's electric SUV market and gives it a presence in an increasingly important part of the car market.

Maruti Suzuki Technology That Makes Everyday Driving Easier
Maruti Suzuki has traditionally kept its engineering simple and efficient, but its newer cars now come with more technology. The range includes petrol, CNG, mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid powertrains, while premium models add connected features, larger screens, 360-degree cameras and driver assistance systems.
Efficient Petrol Engines
Maruti Suzuki offers petrol engines in different sizes to suit different buyers.
- 1.0-litre: Used in the Alto K10, S-Presso, Celerio and Wagon R, with a focus on easy city driving and low running costs.
- 1.2-litre: Used in the Swift, Baleno, Fronx and Dzire, offering a balance of performance and efficiency. The Fronx also gets a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol for stronger performance.
- 1.5-litre: Powers models such as the Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, Grand Vitara, Victoris and Jimny, and is better suited to larger vehicles.
Factory-Fitted CNG Technology
Maruti Suzuki has one of India's widest ranges of factory-fitted CNG cars. CNG is offered across hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MPVs, making it a useful option for buyers with high daily running. Since the system is fitted at the factory, there is no need for an aftermarket conversion.
Smart Hybrid Technology
Maruti Suzuki's Smart Hybrid system is a mild-hybrid setup available on selected models. It uses an Integrated Starter Generator and battery to assist the petrol engine and recover energy during braking and deceleration. They say the aim is to improve everyday fuel efficiency rather than provide electric-only driving. This makes it different from the stronger hybrid system used in models such as the Grand Vitara and Invicto.
Strong Hybrid Technology
The Grand Vitara and Invicto use a stronger hybrid system developed through Maruti Suzuki's technology partnership with Toyota. It combines a petrol engine, electric motor and high-voltage battery, allowing the car to use electric power in certain conditions. It is especially useful in city traffic. The Grand Vitara offers a claimed mileage of up to 27.97 kmpl, while the Victoris strong-hybrid version is rated at up to 28.65 kmpl.
Connected Cabin Technology
Newer Maruti Suzuki models offer features such as touchscreen infotainment, connected-car technology, wireless charging, digital displays, head-up displays and 360-degree cameras, depending on the model and variant. SmartPlay Pro+ is also available on selected models, while higher variants add more premium cabin features.
Maruti Suzuki Safety and Driver Assistance Features
Safety has become a bigger focus for Maruti Suzuki in recent years. The company has strengthened its vehicle platforms and added more standard safety equipment, while selected newer models also offer advanced driver assistance features.
Six Airbags and Essential Safety Features
Maruti Suzuki has moved towards offering six airbags as standard across its range. Other safety features include ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Program, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX mounts, although equipment varies by model and variant. The HEARTECT platform used across several models also uses high-strength steel and crumple zones to help manage crash energy.
Crash Test Performance
The newer Maruti Suzuki lineup has shown a clear improvement in crash-test performance. The Dzire became the first Maruti car to achieve a 5-star Global NCAP rating, while the Brezza, Victoris and Invicto have also achieved 5-star ratings by Bharat NCAP. The Victoris scored 31.66 out of 32 points for adult occupant protection in Bharat NCAP, while the Invicto is based on Toyota's TNGA-C platform.
Advanced Driver Assistance
Selected premium Maruti Suzuki models offer Level 2 ADAS, with features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking. These systems can reduce driver workload and assist in avoiding or reducing the impact of certain collisions. Availability depends on the model and variant.
360-Degree Camera and Active Safety
A 360-degree camera is available on selected models such as the Baleno, Fronx and Grand Vitara. It uses multiple camera views to give the driver a clearer view around the car while parking or moving through tight spaces. Electronic Stability Program and ABS also help maintain control during emergency braking, sudden steering inputs and slippery-road conditions.
Reasons Maruti Suzuki Continues to Be a Favourite Among Indian Buyers
Maruti Suzuki's popularity goes beyond its affordable cars. Good fuel efficiency, a wide service network, reasonable running costs and strong resale value have made the brand a common choice for Indian families.
Excellent Fuel Efficiency
Fuel efficiency has long been one of Maruti Suzuki's biggest strengths. Buyers can choose between petrol, CNG, mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid options depending on their running and budget.
Huge Service Network
Maruti Suzuki has a very large service and dealership network. This makes it easier to find support not just in major cities, but also in smaller towns.
Affordable Maintenance
Routine maintenance is generally straightforward. The wide availability of parts and service centres also helps keep ownership costs manageable.
Strong Resale Value
Popular Maruti Suzuki models usually have strong demand in the used-car market. This can help limit depreciation, especially with high-volume models.
Maruti Suzuki Cars Ownership Experience
Maruti Suzuki ownership is generally about convenience and manageable running costs. Its large service network, easy parts availability and range of efficient powertrains make its cars relatively easy to live with.
Easy Service and Wide Support
The large network is a major advantage, particularly for owners who travel often or live outside major cities.
Arena vs NEXA Experience
Arena and NEXA offer different buying experiences. Arena handles the mainstream range, while NEXA is used for models positioned higher in the portfolio and offers a more premium showroom experience.
Low Running Costs
Efficient petrol engines, CNG options and hybrid technology can help lower running costs, depending on the model and how much you drive.
Long-Term Ownership
Maruti Suzuki cars are often bought for long-term use because they are practical, easy to service and supported by good parts availability. It is still worth comparing service costs and maintenance packages for the exact model and variant.
Maruti Suzuki Car Buying Insights
Maruti Suzuki offers cars for very different requirements, so choosing the right model and variant is important.
- Choose the right fuel type: CNG makes more sense for high annual running, while petrol may be easier for lower usage.
- Understand the automatic gearbox: Maruti Suzuki offers AMT/AGS, a 6-speed torque converter and e-CVT systems. Their driving feel is quite different, so take a test drive before deciding.
- Pick Arena or NEXA carefully: The two channels cover different parts of the Maruti Suzuki range and offer different showroom experiences.
- Compare variants closely: Features can differ a lot between trims, and some equipment may be changed or removed with model updates.
- Think about highway usage: If you travel long distances often, look beyond mileage and consider engine performance, ride comfort and highway stability.
- Do a proper PDI: Check the exterior, tyres, lights, interior, odometer and documents before taking delivery.
- Look at the complete ownership cost: Include insurance, service packages, accessories and running costs rather than comparing only the ex-showroom price.
car&bike Expert Tips for Maruti Suzuki Buyers
Here are some tips curated by our experts to help you with decision-making.
- Test-drive both manual and automatic versions if you are unsure about the transmission.
- If most of your driving is in the city, compare petrol, CNG and hybrid options based on your annual running.
- Check rear-seat space and boot capacity if the car will be used regularly by the family.
- Do not choose a higher variant just for a longer feature list. Focus on what you will actually use.
- For SUVs such as the Grand Vitara and Brezza, drive them over broken roads before making a decision.
- If considering an MPV, spend time in the third row and check how much luggage space is left with all seats occupied.
- Compare warranty and maintenance packages before finalising the deal.
- If you prefer a 4-cylinder engine hatchback, check with your local dealer if the older Baleno model is still available.

Maruti Suzuki Car User Reviews
- Exterior styling won the race5.0PerformanceMileageComfortCost of OwnershipValue for MoneySafetyStylingSales SupportShahid BhasinThe 2025 Dzire’s revamped exterior styling has won me over with its sharper, more modern look compared to the older model. The sleeker headlamps and updated grille give it a premium aura that the previous Dzire couldn't quite capture. It genuinely feels like Maruti put in the effort to make it stand out, and I’ve already received compliments on its street presence.Posted on: 2024-11-14 12:14:34112

- Brezza is Fantastic choice5.0PerformanceMileageComfortCost of OwnershipValue for MoneySafetyStylingSales SupportMrgesh WaderaThe Maruti Suzuki Brezza is a fantastic choice in the subcompact crossover SUV segment. It offers great safety features like multiple airbags, and the engine performance is solid for city and highway drives. The boot space is ample, and the fuel efficiency is a bonus. It’s stylish, spacious, and very affordable.Posted on: 2024-09-19 16:20:5341

- Truly a value for money car - An SUV for a middle-class Indian5.0PerformanceMileageComfortCost of OwnershipValue for MoneySafetyStylingSales SupportAjit Singh KalraI was driving a non-AC Maruti 800 since year 2002 which was purchased by my father at that time. That Maruti 800 is still in a good condition but everybody knows that it?s not spacious and also as it was a non-AC, so it was horrible to drive it in summers. Since Feb 2016, I was thinking of purchasing a new hatchback car (with AC). I belong to a middle class Indian family and my budget was not that high. I could do without many features (which are available in expensive cars) like power steering, power windows, rear defogger, rear wiper, ABS, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), speed sensing door lock, parking sensors, vanity mirrors on sun visors and various other luxury features as these were also not available in Maruti 800. After all I had to shift from a 14 year old non-AC Maruti 800 to a better car. I studied about various hatchback cars on internet and then I observed that majority of popular hatchback cars of different brands like MaruPosted on: 2019-12-16 15:52:4917935

The design is sleek, and the ground clearance makes it perfect for city roads and highways. The automatic transmission is smooth, and the fuel efficiency is impressive for a subcompact crossover SUV.
