A Comprehensive Checklist For Your Upcoming Road Trip

- The first-ever recorded road trip in the world was made by Bertha Benz
- One should not drive more than 9 hours a day,
- A 12-hour drive is unsafe for drivers and should be avoided if possible
Driving is one of the greatest pleasures in life, but it can soon turn into a nightmare if the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Therefore, it is extremely important to check the car thoroughly and prepare a comprehensive checklist to ensure an enjoyable driving experience.

Inspecting the wheels
Imagine going on a road trip, and the tires puncture in the middle of nowhere with the spare tire not being available – sounds like a nightmare, right? Before going on a road trip, check the tire pressure and look for recent tread wear, puncture, or cracks. Check the spare tire and make sure that it is in perfect condition; if not, get it replaced immediately. Ensure that the tire pressure is at the recommended level and neither under-inflated nor over-inflated.

Checking the lights
Take a quick peek at all the lights in and around the vehicle. Check the headlights and the taillights and ensure they operate at maximum illumination. These lights become crucial while driving through bad weather (fog, mist, rainfall), and it would be a disaster if these lights malfunction at crucial moments. Check the bulbs inside the car and replace them if they don't work properly.
Wiper Blades
Extreme conditions can heat the rubber blades and lead to the wiper blades getting worn out. Make sure to check the wipers before leaving for the trip.
Checking rubber hoses
Rubber hoses and pipes are extremely vulnerable to damage and can get easily worn out. Make sure to check them before heading out on the trip. If the engine is getting overheated, that could be a sign of trouble. Raise the car and check for any oil residue or rust stains in and around the engine. If there are patches of oil under the region where the car was parked, that could be a sign of a leak that needs to be fixed immediately.

Pack the essentials
Experts have suggested many items that can be considered road trip essentials involving sunglasses, pillows, blankets, water jugs, extra food, extra fuel, first aid kit, medication, identity proof, a map or GPS device, etc. Make sure that the emergency kit is complete with all the items.
Brake pads and fuel tank
Check the brake pads before hitting the road; worn-out brake pads could be worrying and lead to unfortunate accidents. If you notice some squealing noises or jitters in the brake pads, make sure to get the pads checked by a mechanic.
Fill up the tank beforehand so that the car doesn't have to be stopped in the middle of nowhere due to low fuel. Carry extra fuel so that it comes in handy during emergencies.
Make sure to have a complete idea of the route and preferably keep a map so that the car doesn't get stranded in the middle of anywhere with no sense of direction.
