Auto Sales October 2021: Passenger Vehicle Sales Drops 27% YoY Due To Chip Shortage

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has released the monthly sales numbers for October 2021. Last month the total passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market stood at 2,26,353 units, a year-on-year decline of 27 per cent compared to the 3,10,694 vehicles sold in October 2020. SIAM says that while manufacturers were banking on the festive season to recover, the shortage of semiconductor chips and steep hike in raw material cost have been a major spoilsport for the auto industry.

Total two-wheeler sales for October 2021 stood at 15,41,621 units, a nearly 25 per cent decline compared to 20,53,814 units sold during the same month in 2020. As for the three-wheeler segment, as per the SIAM report, 31,774 three-wheelers were sold in the domestic market last month, which is a growth of 19 per cent compared to 26,684 units sold in October 2020. SIAM says that while the number of three-wheelers sold in October 2021 was more than the previous year, it is still less than half compared to 66,985 units sold in October 2019.

Overall auto sales for October 2021 stood at 17,99,750 units, a nearly 25 per cent decline compared to the 23,91,192 vehicles sold during the same month last year. Also, during October 2021, the total production of Passenger Vehicles, Three Wheelers, Two Wheelers and Quadricycles stood at 22,14,745 units. Compared to the 2,830,844 vehicles produced in October 2020, vehicle production saw a YoY drop of nearly 22 per cent. Do note, all the numbers mentioned above do not include data from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors, and Volvo Auto.

31,774 three-wheelers were sold in the domestic market last month, which is a growth of 19 per cent

As for exports, in the month of October 2021, PV exports fell 2 per cent to 39,666 units compared to the same period in 2020. Three-wheeler exports remained stagnant at 42,696 units, while two-wheeler exports for October saw less than 1 per cent growth at 374,072 units. Total auto exports also remained stagnant at 456,698 units.

Between April and October 2021, total vehicle sales stood at 98,00,507, a 5 per cent growth compared to 93,15,660 units sold during the same month in 2020. During these 7 months, passenger vehicle sales grew 35 per cent to 11,90,660, and three-wheelers sales increased by nearly 48 per cent to 1,27,195 units, compared to the same months in 2020. Two-wheeler sales, however, saw less than 1 per cent growth with 80,59,237 units being sold between April and October 2021.
