BMW Group To Launch Three Premium EVs In India In H2 2022

- The first BMW EV going on sale in India will be the BMW iX xDrive40.
- It'll be followed by the MINI Cooper SE electric launching in 90 days.
- The BMW i4 EV will be the last model launching in 180 days from today.
BMW might be a little late to the party with its EVs but now that its electric vehicles are finally here, the Bavarian brand is all set to build a robust EV offensive. BMW Group has not one but three EVs in its pipeline for the Indian market and all of them will hit our roads within six months from now. In fact, the first EV to go on sale is obviously the much-anticipated BMW iX followed by the hot hatch - MINI Cooper SE electric which will go on sale in 90 days from today. The last model joining its EV portfolio will be the BMW i4 electric sedan that will come to our shores in 180 days from now.

The BMW iX will be the brand's first EV to go on sale in India.
The Bavarian carmaker has also confirmed starting with deliveries on April 22, 2022 for the iX and has started accepting pre-bookings at its dealerships across the country. The India-spec BMW iX will be launched in the xDrive40 iteration that will come with a 76.6 kWh battery pack and since it's the xDrive or all-wheel-drive (AWD), there will be two electric motors mounted on each axle, in-turn powering all four wheels. The powertrain will churn out 322 bhp and 630 Nm of peak torque and will propel the SUV from 0 to 100 kmph in 6.1 seconds. The claimed range as per the WLTP cycle is 425 km and a 150 kW DC fast charger will give a range of over 95 km in 10 mins, as the brand claims. BMW has also said that the more powerful iX xDrive50 variant has not yet been confirmed for India, but neither has it been ruled out for our market.

Going by the global-spec model, the MINI Cooper SE packs an electric motor that develops 181 bhp and 270 Nm of peak torque. Power comes from the 32.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a range of 270 km on a single charge. The electric hatchback can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 7.3 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 150 kmph. Compared to the petrol model, the electric version is about 145 kg heavier.

The BMW i4 electric sedan will be offered with two powertrain choices. The eDrive40 is rear-wheel drive and puts out 330 bhp and 430 Nm of peak torque. Now this takes 5.9 seconds to clock triple-digit speeds and the battery has an 83.9 kWh gross capacity while 81.5 kWh is usable. BMW is estimating that the i4 can drive up to 483 km on a single charge according to the WLTP cycle. Then, there is the all-wheel-drive M50 sedan which gets a pair of electric motors, one mounted on each axle. The electric motors here put out a total 529 bhp. BMW hasn't given the torque output for these all-wheel-drive variants yet. Now this one is significantly quicker to triple-digit speeds at 3.9 seconds while using the same battery pack.
