BMW Showcases the 2002 Hommage Concept

- BMW showcases the 2002 Hommage, a tribute to the old 2002
- It is supposedly based on the current generation M2
- It will not be entering mass production
It was the 02 range of cars that ushered in an era of success for BMW as a car manufacturer. The 2002, the first model of the 02 range was the very first mass-produced car in Europe to have a turbo-charged engine. As a tribute to the 2002, BMW showcased the 2002 Hommage at Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy a few days ago. The Hommage basically celebrates the concept and engineering of the 2002 model and have tried to give it a modern twist.
The 2002 Hommage is a thing of beauty. There is this distinct divide on the car in the form of a carbon-strip along the shoulder line. The part of the car above the carbon strip is done in matte paint finish while everything below is done in a glossy finish. The car sits very close to the tarmac, with the front bumper just centimetres above it. The front end is aggressive and harks back to the original 2002 of fifty years ago with those round headlamps and minimal overhangs. The headlamps are bordered by golden coloured reflectors which are a testimony to the 50th anniversary of the 2002 model. The turbo badge near the signature kidney-shaped grille is reminiscent of the first ever turbo-charged car in Europe.
Adding muscle to the 2002 Hommage are the flared wheel arches which house the rubbers mounted on 20-inch alloys that give a feel of the car having spinner wheels. The golden brake calipers look extremely classy on those multi-spoke wheels. The 2002 Hommage is supposedly based on the current generation M2 but BMW still won't talk about the engine details and specifications. Also, the BMW 2002 Hommage will not be made into a production car. It's just that BMW designers and engineers let their imagination run wild once a year for the Villa d'Este event in Italy. Recently, BMW Motorrad had also showcased the R5 Hommage at the same event.
