Brembo Recall Now Extends To KTM Bikes

- The Brembo recall initially included Ducati, MV Agusta & Aprilia bikes
- The Brembo master cylinder unit can crack leading to brake failure
- The issue is limited to some high performance bikes using this brake
The Brembo brake master cylinder recall has now extended to the fourth motorcycle brand, and this time it's KTM, after Aprilia, Ducati and MV Agusta. The issue is with Brembo's master cylinder unit, which can potentially develop a crack and lead to front brake failure. The issue stems from certain 15 mm and 16 mm radial-pump brake master cylinders that have been fitted as an OEM part to a range of high-performance motorcycles. The issue is because of the material used in the master cylinder, which is a type of plastic called polyphenylene sulphide which can crack when used extensively on a racetrack or with regular ABS intervention and even during a fall.

Now, KTM Super Duke motorcycles are also affected by the Brembo recall. KTM North America is recalling certain 2015-16 1290 Super Duke R ABS, 2016 Super Duke R SE ABS and 1290 Super Duke GT ABS and 2017-18 Super Duke R and 1290 Super Duke GT motorcycles. KTM will notify owners and dealers will replace the piston with an aluminium one, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on March 9, 2018.
The total number of affected motorcycles is still not known, and it's still not known if motorcycles with Brembo brakes sold in India will be among the affected lot as well. The issue has led to a massive recall affecting several motorcycle manufacturers and even brands like TM Racing, Moto Morini and Horex. So far, it's not clear which other motorcycle manufacturers may be affected as a result of this recall, but aftermarket kits which use the same material may be affected as well.
