BYD Dolphin Electric Car Launched In China; Prices Start At Less Than $20,000

- The Dolphin has a starting price of $15,000 after subsidies
- Even its top of the line model costs less than $20,000 after subsidies
- The baseline model offers 301 km of range on single charge
The BYD Dolphin has launched in China making it one of the most affordable electric cars in the world with an estimated price point between $15,000 and $20,000. Introduced under the codename EA1 earlier this year at the Shanghai Auto Show in April, it features the new BYD e-platform 3.0. This is an affordable electric car for the masses that had been approved for sales and production in China last June, and soon will be available for purchase in the Asian giant. This will be a high volume vehicle considering its price and size which will suit it well on the congested roads of China. As mentioned earlier, it is based on the new e-platform 3.0 architecture which means it gets the BYD Blade battery chemistry and cell-to-pack production technology.

It will be one of the most affordable electric cars in the world
It comes with a 30.7 kWh battery for 301 km range as per the Chinese standard of NEDC range with a 70 kW motor. It also has a variant that has a larger 44.9 kWh battery that offers 405 km of range with the same 70 kW motor. The top of the line model has the same 44.9 kWh battery and a bigger 130 kW motor that will offer better performance but perhaps a lower range.

It also will get a heat pump in all models which could enhance the winter range and there is also the NFC enabled car key feature.
Even the baseline model with a 70 kW motor can do 0-50 kmph speeds in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 150 kmph. The faster 130 kW motor model can do the same in 3 seconds and has a slightly higher top speed of 160 kmph. All in all, this is looking like an electric car for the masses.
