Highlights

Last year the Delhi government had decided to retail fuel to motorists only if they possessed 'pollution under control' certificates. The in-principle decision to check vehicular pollution in the city would have needed motorists to show the emission certificates at petrol pumps to refuel their vehicles.

Chief Secretary S K Srivastava had said that a report by an expert committee to check vehicular pollution had recommended production of the pollution under check certificate (PUC) by motorists which was accepted. However, it was made clear that it may take some time to enforce the decision. Srivastava said the Delhi government would first launch a campaign to educate people and other stakeholders about the issue so that people voluntarily abide by the directives.

Last year, an expert committee had also recommended hiking parking fee and other road taxes in order to encourage people to use public transport. More recent measures to combat pollution in the capital include the ban on diesel vehicles older than 10 years.

While the PUC-check-dependent-fueling is yet to come in to effect in Delhi, Bengaluru is gearing up to adopt similar measures to fight pollution. The Karnataka government recently informed the High Court of Karnataka that a notification to stop supply of fuel to vehicles not possessing such certificates is being issued.
