Ford India Halts Production At Tamil Nadu Plant Over COVID Scare Among Workers

- Ford had suspended operations for two days at its Tamil Nadu plant
- The plant operations will remain suspended on May 28 and May 29, 2021
- There is a rising number of COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu right now
Ford India has halted production at its Tamil Nadu plant for two days. The company has announced 'no production days' on May 28 and 29 following a demand from a section of workers to suspend operations at the Maraimalai Nagar facility, near Chennai. It was just earlier this week, on May 24, that the company resumed operations after a production halt of eight days, imposed due to COVID-19 restriction. However, due to unrest among worker over the rising number of coronavirus cases in the area, the company has decided to yet again suspend operations on Friday, May 28 and Saturday, May 29.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a lockdown till May 31, but if it's extended the workers want Ford to extend the production halt as well
Reportedly, some employees at the plant demanded suspension of production by boycotting the lunch served to them, citing the high prevalence of COVID-19. Sources in the company's workers' union have told PTI that "given the pandemic, the workers fear for their lives. Besides, the state government has also declared a total lockdown". The workers want the company to declare a holiday till the ongoing lockdown ends. The Tamil Nadu government has announced a lockdown till May 31 for now, however, if the government extends it, then the workers also want the management to extend the holiday. So far, the company has been operating the Tamil Nadu production facility on a single shift, with nearly 1,500 to 1,700 employees working on a single day.
