Highlights

  • The 2.0-litre Eco Blue engine can be tuned for varied power outputs
  • The new Eco Blue engine will be used in commercial and passenger cars
  • Innovative new technology used in developing the Eco Blue engine
One can safely say that Ford has mastered the art of making turbocharged engines. Its 1.0-litre EcoBoost unit has won multiple awards including the prestigious Engine of the year award three times in a row from 2012-14. Continuing in the same vein, the American manufacturer revealed the all-new 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder Eco Blue diesel engine, which promises to offer better efficiency and performance. The new engine can be tuned to produce power outputs ranging from 100PS to 240PS in future cars from Ford. The engine has been developed by Ford R&D teams in UK and Germany.

Ford says that the new engine assures better drivability with 20 per cent more torque being delivered at 1,250rpms compared to the older 2.-litre TDCi engines. This means the cars fitted with these engines will be easier to drive on traffic laden roads and other urban conditions. The fuel combustion is cleaner and also the friction inside has been greatly reduced. This results in a massive 55 per cent reduction in emissions compared Euro Stage V standards. Also, the fuel efficiency goes up by a significant 13 per cent.

Some of the other technological innovations include the use of a low-inertia turbocharger made from the same materials as used in rockets being much more resistant to higher temperatures than the previous engine. The fuel injection system is also new and promises precise fuel delivery. Also, modular crankshafts, a crank off-set by 10mm, a belt-in-oil design for the camshaft and oil pump drive belts and so on. The bottom line being that Ford believes the Eco Blue engines to be as competent and versatile as its 1.0-litre EcoBoost range of engines. Additionally, Ford has also taken several steps to keep the NVH in check such as using foam encapsulation on cylinder heads, advanced fuel injectors and a noise deadening software as well. Who would have thought?
