Hotter Mercedes-AMG GT R Teased; Could Be Road-Going Version Of The GT4

- The camouflaged test mule of meaner AMG GT R was teased in new AMG video
- The AMG GT4 race car was showcased over a year ago in December 2016
- The new top-spec AMG GT R could be revealed later this year
Mercedes-AMG, the performance arm of the Stuttgart-based carmaker, is working on a hotter and sportier version of its flagship GT model - the Mercedes-AMG GT R. A camouflaged test mule of this meaner version of the AMG GT R was teased in the company's latest recruitment video that was recently released by the carmaker. This new car could essentially be a road-oriented version of the company's AMG GT4 race car, which was showcased a little over a year ago in December 2016. If we had to give you an example, think of how the Porsche GT3 RS is to the standard GT3.
Now, the video mainly focuses on the company's employees from the AMG division talking about their work and role in the company and how exciting it is to work on AMG cars, thus luring new employees. One of the biggest bait comes towards the end of the video where one of the hosts drives out in the aforementioned test mule of the new sportier version of the AMG GT R.

Mercedes-AMG GT4 Race Car was first revealed in December 2016
So, why do we think that this is a higher-spec version of the GT R and not the GT R itself? Well, firstly placing a camouflaged test mule of the car instead of the actual car itself in a company video seems a bit weird, especially when the car has already been launched. So, we are dealing with an upcoming model here. A more practical reason is the car itself, which gets a revised front and rear bumper with wider airdam up front, a new exhaust test setup with the pipes places in each corner instead of the centre, as in the AMG GT R, are widely similar to the GT4 race car. Furthermore, there have been sightings of a test mule doing some laps on the track with a roll-cage, a camouflaged tailgate and other updates.

Hotter Mercedes-AMG GT R and GT4 get similar rear bumpers
Under the hood, the car will come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine code-named M177 that powers the regular GT R, belting out about 577 bhp and a whopping 700 Nm of peak torque. However, we do not know how many extra hoses the more hardcore version of the car will produce. We also, expect the new car to be considerably lighter, compared to the regular GT R's 1,655 kg kerb weight.
