Highlights

India is quite an important market for Hyundai, and that is exactly why the Korean carmaker launched three important products - the Grand i10, Xcent and new i20 - first in India and then in other markets. The next product to make its global debut in India will be the i20 Cross, which is already being tested here. The hatchback-based crossover will make its debut by early 2015.

Though the crossover will be based on the i20 hatchback, Hyundai has given it additional body cladding, new grille, bigger alloy wheels and a handful of other features to make it look different. The cabin will also feature quite a few changes in order to give the car a sporty appeal. With so many changes, we are expecting the crossover to get an additional Rs 40,000 - Rs 50,000 over the premium hatchback's cost.

Powering the crossover will be the same set of engines, 1.2-litre Kappa2 petrol and 1.4-litre CRDi diesel, that also do duty on the i20. The i20 Cross will rival other hatchback-based crossovers including Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura and VW Cross Polo.

While the first half will see the arrival of the i20-based crossover, Hyundai will launch its much-anticipated ix25 SUV in the second half of this year.
