Mahindra e2o Plus To Be Phased Out Soon

Mahindra Electric will be soon end the production of its fully-electric hatchback, the Mahindra e2o Plus. A company spokesperson told us that the main reason for phasing out the model is because the car doesn't meet the new safety norms that will come into play later this year in October 2019. Furthermore, Mahindra Electric is already working on a new electric hatchback - Electric KUV100, which is slated to be launched later this year. Also, considering the low volumes of electric cars in the personal segment, the carmaker doesn't want two e-hatchbacks in the same space. Having said that, the company will continue to produce the e2o Plus for export markets like Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

Based on the Reva NXR, the Mahindra e2o was first launched in India in 2013, and even today continues to be the only electric car available for personal use. While initially, the car was only available in the 2-door format, a couple of years back the company replaced it with the facelifted, 4-door version e2o Plus. However, due to low demand from the market, and flagging sales, the company had to make this tough choice.

Also, under the new FAME II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles) personal electric vehicles do not get subsidy. This has further affected the sales of the car. The Mahindra e2o Plus hatchback comes in two range options - 110 km trim powered by a lead-acid battery, and the range-topping P8 variant with a lithium-ion battery offering a range of up to 140 km. The top-speed is restricted to 85 kmph. Mahindra currently also offers the e-Verito and e-Supro for the fleet and commercial vehicle segments and both the models will continue to be in production.
