The luxury car manufacturers announced their global sales report for the month of August 2016 and well expectations were running high as to who is doing better than the other. But from the numbers that have been put out, Mercedes-Benz has topped the sales chart by selling over 1.56 lakh cars globally which saw sales surge by 11.8per cent when compared to August 2015.

Now, yes, you're wondering who took the second and third spot, well, there's a surprise in second place with BMW going past Audi. BMW sold 1.42 lakh units while Audi AG managed to sell 1.32 lakh units in August 2016 globally. BMW registered a 5 per cent growth in sales while Audi saw an overall growth of 3 per cent.

Audi's performance in individual countries has been impressive as it grew by 8.8 per cent in China, 13.2 per cent in the United Kingdom and a whopping 23.3 per cent in Spain in August 2016 as compared to the same month a year ago. However, weaker sales in markets like South America, Eastern Europe and Middle-East lead to the fall in Audi's standing in the top three.

Dietmar Voggenreiter, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Audi AG commented, "In a generally difficult market environment, a healthy, sustainable development is top priority for us. In August, Audi achieved its 80th month of growth in a row. This impressive sequence shows that our business is geared towards solid long-term success"

    Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Cumulative global sales of Audi from January to August 2016 increased by 4.9 per cent with sales reaching 12.34 lakh while Mercedes-Benz sold over 13.26 lakh units in the first 8 months this year.

For Mercedes-Benz, sales in Europe increased by 12.9 per cent with the company selling 56,809 units and this was all thanks to the new-gen E-class. The company sold almost 17,000 E-class Saloon and Estate in August 2016.

Having sorted two out of the three, we now come to BMW. It's been a good year for the Bavarian car manufacturer as it managed to sell 12.82 lakh units in the first eight months of 2016. The BMW X range continues to drive sales for the company with 16,612 units delivered worldwide in August 2016. The introduction of new generation X1 worldwide has helped in a big way while the sales of the X3 too increased by 29.7 per cent with 12663 units sold.

The company has also stated that it has sold over 5000 units of the new 7-Series worldwide. The dark horse in all of this is Jaguar and the Tata owned company also recorded its best ever sales in August of 36,926 units and its cumulative sales in the first 8 months of this calendar year stood at over 3.72 lakh units, so it's still a far cry from the numbers the top three car makers have but yet the company has the potential to go even further with the F-Pace and with them introducing the SUV in more markets (including India) and the new XF, we'll see those numbers going up too.
